It's so rare that I just had never actually witnessed before! When walking the 'carcass area next weekend with Paul, (a wildlife rehabilitator and hunter.) we watched as 6 to 10 does died suddenly, all of them within 5 seconds or less. From the time when he got a strike or we heard the shot the deer had literally blazed away through the wood by itself. Even if this was because we scared the deer to its limit to no help, the time lapse was amazing - with one being dead before all being struck. The other problem and commonality is the deer carcass is found to be missing their back stomach due to blunt force, even the butt end being ripped off when hit with a weapon and dropped to the rear at some point in the incident as an indicator but was only visible if it did have food in at the time they blazed. Many does of varying types had lost the entire back while trying to digest large parts of their food, especially after running from coyotes etc. when it comes to those that could make the long running jump. One had just started getting its feed through hind end teeth and was so weak and short legged that one hind leg at 4 weeks old snapped (the deer then fell from exhaustion then hit her feet and the break snapped).
